free hand quilting free motion quilting motif builder quilting technique workshop Jan 08, 2024

Motif Building is such a fun way to create unique free motion quilting motifs by stacking individual motifs that are already in your toolbox to create fresh, fun new designs.

Before we dive into motif building, let's go over some terms that you’ll hear me use.

Base motifs are the foundation of your designs, it can be any motif, this is our starting point. Think simple designs like pebbles, paisley swirls , not limited to these, just a starting point.

While variations are small changes to those base motifs , allowing you to adapt and evolve your designs.

Stacks are the single motifs you will add to your base… stacking our motifs. pst... you already have these in your free motion quilting toolbox!

Travellers are the motifs that lend themselves well to connect your newly built motif. (spines, loops) . these are used when converting your newly built motif to an E2E design

And Fillers are motifs that are independent from the motif build and are added to help fill in those awkward spaces. (like loop or leaf an added element).

Outside build Start with a base and build it on the outside.

Inside build Start with a base and build it on the inside.
